Kaufman Rossin in the Community: Bakehouse Art Complex

Read

Lisa Cawley Ruiz talks about her involvement in the community.

Which organization are you involved in and what is its objective?

I’m involved in the Bakehouse Art Complex, Miami’s incubator for artistic creativity and the original arts institution in Wynwood. The non-profit visual arts and education institution was founded in 1986 and houses 65 artist studios, two galleries and shared workshop space in a historic bakery building. Today the Bakehouse is not only a creative center, but also a vibrant community hub serving artists, patrons, art collectors and the South Florida community.

What is your role with the organization?

I formerly served as secretary of the board of directors and chair of the marketing and PR committee. When I stepped off the board last year, my colleague Peter Smith quickly stepped up and has become an integral member of the Bakehouse board. I am still very involved in the organization, helping in any way I can, whether that is by referring potential donors, suggesting partnership opportunities or offering guidance on marketing initiatives.

Why did you decide to get involved in this organization?

I first visited the Bakehouse in 2008, when my now-husband and I wandered off the beaten path on art walk night in Wynwood. I’m so glad that we decided to explore that night because what we found was a hidden treasure. The Bakehouse Art Complex was unlike any of the gallery spaces that we visited before or since. We enjoyed the opportunity to talk to the artists about the inspiration behind their work, learn about their techniques, and see their process. Everyone was so inviting and open, and they transformed our experience from viewing art to participating in it. When an opportunity arose to join the board a few years later, I jumped at it.

How has Kaufman Rossin contributed to your success with this organization?

Kaufman Rossin allowed me flexibility to attend board meetings and other organization events. The firm has also sponsored the Bakehouse’s signature fundraiser, the Lucky You! art raffle, for the past two years. In addition, the Bakehouse Art Complex is this month’s designated jeans day charity.

What is your advice for others who are thinking about getting involved in the community?

Take a look around. There are so many opportunities to get involved and countless organizations and people who need your help. It is hard work to run a non-profit, and most organizations are happy for any assistance they can get. Join a board, volunteer your time or attend a fundraising event. Ask how you can help. If you can make our community a better place to live, you will find that there is much to be grateful for and much to be gained. The experiences you will have and the lives you will touch are invaluable rewards for time and money well spent.
