Kaufman Rossin in the Community: Brianna’s Forever 8 Foundation
Read
Melanie Hernandez of Kaufman Rossin talks about her involvement in the community.
Which organization are you involved in and what is its objective?
Brianna’s Forever 8 Foundation was established by Brian and Maria Medina in memory of their daughter, Brianna Medina, who at the age of 7 was diagnosed with restrictive cardiomyopathy, a rare and incurable heart muscle condition. Faced with sudden acute heart failure, a life-saving transplant was Brianna’s only option. Tragically, Brianna passed away shortly after her 8th birthday while waiting for her heart transplant.
A gifted artist, Brianna endured her extended and restricted hospital-bound days through engagement in the visual, auditory and expressive arts with the support of artists in residence and art therapy. Her life, diagnosis and hospital experience placed the Medinas on a new journey – one of transforming the hospital experience, and creating Brianna’s HOPE Fund, which has three programs designed to help children and families coping with the unimaginable. You can learn more about the programs at the University of Florida Health website.
What is your role with the organization?
I have been a volunteer since the foundation’s inception and have contributed numerous hours to the memorial, awareness and fundraising events. Recently, I volunteered at the foundation’s memorial fundraiser, HOPE Shines Bright, which was a moving live concert featuring the compassionate and talented work of UF Health Shands Arts in Medicine (AIM ) musicians in residence. Each year, these musicians collaborate with hospitalized patients to create original songs and musical arrangements that speak to their unique health journeys and challenges. The music they performed was made possible by one of Brianna’s HOPE programs called “How I Rock.”
Why did you decide to get involved in this organization?
I was inspired by Brianna and her courage. I drew strength and inspiration from her story, and I have since developed a desire to help children and their families regain a sense of their “healthy selves” while coping with life-threatening illnesses. Brianna’s HOPE programs have helped numerous patients and provided a platform for family legacy stories.
How has Kaufman Rossin contributed to your success with this organization?
Kaufman Rossin has been a wonderful supporter of this organization, not only providing financial support, but also allowing me to raise awareness of the mission and purpose of Brianna’s HOPE programs.
What is your advice for others who are thinking about getting involved in the community?
Pick an organization with a cause that inspires you. No contribution is too small. Even a $5 or $10 donation is a great place to start!
