Kaufman Rossin in the Community: Ocean Cleanup
Read
Yesenia Tapanes of Kaufman Rossin talks about her experience as a volunteer for Ocean Cleanup.
Which organization are you involved in and what is its objective?
I am a volunteer with Ocean Cleanup. Ocean plastic pollution is a worldwide problem, and we are taking action to solve the issue on a global scale. Our mission is not one we can achieve alone, so we welcome and encourage partners to accelerate our impact by joining the largest cleanup in history. We calculate it will take 20 years to rid the world’s oceans of plastic, so we look for long-term partnerships with those who want to make a genuine and sustained commitment to our mission, create a legacy and be part of the movement to solve one of the biggest environmental problems of this era.
What is your role with the organization?
I volunteer with my sister, Susy. We make it a family affair! We bring our family together often for beach cleanups and involve the kids. The biggest impact we can have is educating the next generation to love and respect the ocean and local ecosystems. We also spread awareness through social media and local community events and raise funds with the help of our employers.
Why did you decide to get involved in this organization?
I’ve lived in Miami all my life, and the ocean has always held a special place in my heart. Most of my fondest memories are at the beach with family, going to the Florida Keys, sitting by the water. It is heart-wrenching to see the damage humanity is causing to this natural resource and its delicate eco-system. I decided to be proactive and join an organization whose mission aligned with my passion for the ocean, one that I believed has the ability to take real action to save our oceans for future generations.
How has Kaufman Rossin contributed to your success with this organization?
Kaufman Rossin has been a constant in our life for over 25 years. The firm’s commitment to community and its willingness support our involvement in causes that are near and dear to our hearts makes the experience of volunteering that much more rewarding. Thanks to our Jeans Day program, we are able to bring everyone in the firm together to support causes we’re passionate about; it’s a great way to not only fundraise, but also to spark conversations and spread awareness.
What is your advice for others who are thinking about getting involved in the community?
“The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others” – Mahatma Ghandi. I find this to be true in my personal experience as volunteering has always been a part of my life. Those selfless moments are the ones that brought me the most peace.
