Kaufman Rossin in the Community: Parks Foundation of Miami-Dade

Raul Garcia of Kaufman Rossin talks about his involvement in the community.

Which organization are you involved in and what is its objective?

I’m involved with the Parks Foundation of Miami-Dade (“PFMD”).  The objective of PFMD is to foster the recreational, educational, environmental and cultural life of Miami-Dade county community by encouraging and soliciting support for our county’s park system.

This month particularly, the PFMD is raising funds in support of Splash into Safety Learn-to-Swim Scholarships for children from at-risk areas of Miami-Dade County.  A $60 scholarship will provide swimming lessons (two-weeks of classes) at Miami-Dade County Parks’ pools taught by Red Cross certified staff. Your support will make a significant impact in our ability to reach more children in the community.

What is your role with the organization?

Currently, I am the president of the foundation.  My unofficial role is the heart and passion of the organization.  Through my position, I am able to visit with state and local politicians in support of Miami-Dade Park system.

Why did you decide to get involved in this organization?

I was born and raised in Miami and parks have been an integral part of my development as a child, teenager and as an adult.  My parents had the wherewithal to involve me in after-school sporting activities to occupy my time.  The unintended consequence was that I learned life lessons; specifically how to lose and win, together, as a team.  These are lessons I still use at work and they have made quite an impact in my professional success.

How has Kaufman Rossin contributed to your success with this organization?

Kaufman Rossin has supported my efforts with the organization by allowing me to participate in many activities.  With the firm’s support, I’ve had the opportunity to lobby at the Florida State Capital, speaking at several budget hearings and individual meetings with Mayor Gimenez and other commissioners.

What is your advice for others who are thinking about getting involved in the community?

It’s all about your passion.  Find something that moves you and figure out how to get involved.  An active community makes for a great city!  Do you want to be a part of that?  Do you want to make a difference?  I cannot think of a better way than to get involved than with a local charity.
