Kaufman Rossin Authorized as Certifying Acceptance Agent
Kaufman Rossin, one of the top CPA firms in the U.S., announced that it has been recognized by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) as a Certifying Acceptance Agent, authorizing the firm to assist foreign individuals in obtaining an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN).
ITINs are used as tax processing numbers for foreign nationals who are required to have a U.S. taxpayer identification number but who are not eligible to obtain a Social Security Number. Kaufman Rossin is certified to authenticate the documentation required by the IRS to obtain an ITIN, simplifying and expediting the process for foreign individuals who require an ITIN.
The IRS implemented new requirements for obtaining an ITIN in 2013. Previously, the agency accepted notarized photocopies of certain identifying documents as personal identification along with the ITIN application (Form W-7). As of 2013, application forms submitted without at least one of the following documents will generally be rejected:
- The original identification document (e.g., a passport)
- A certified copy of the document that the original issuing agency provides with an official stamped seal from that agency
- A copy of the original document certified or authenticated by an officer at a U.S. Embassy or Consulate
Rather than visit the local IRS office or Tax Assistance Center, clients can now make an appointment and process ITIN applications at one of Kaufman Rossin’s South Florida offices.
