2-Month Extension Gives Taxpayers Abroad More Time to File
Read
U.S. citizens or residents can request an additional discretionary, two-month extension to file their 2013 federal income tax return if they are residing outside of the United States and Puerto Rico. This extension, in addition to an existing six-month extension, delays the due date for 2013 tax returns until December 15th, 2014
Extension requests must be written and sent to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) no later than October 15th to be considered. In order to qualify, taxpayers must meet one of the following criteria:
- Their tax homes and abodes must be located outside of the United States, or
- They must be members of the U.S. Armed Forces stationed outside of the United States and Puerto Rico.
If you would like to request this extension, send a letter to the IRS address below that explains why you need the additional two months to file and that includes your Social Security Number, a verifiable address and the tax year.

Unless your request is denied because it arrived after October 15th, you will not receive a notification from the IRS about your extension. If you have questions about requesting your extension, contact me or another member of Kaufman Rossin’s international tax team.
