Digital Advancement Awards Honor South Florida Technology Ambassadors

The South Florida Digital Alliance (SFDA) hosted its 4th annual Digital Advancement and Excellence Awards on November 3, 2014. My colleague, Ralph MacNamara, served as Master of Ceremonies for the event, which recognized individuals and organizations working to bridge the digital divide “by using technology that increases access to information, reduces the cost of technology, or increases connectivity among members of our community.”

SFDA honored seven individuals and organizations who have contributed to the community through projects such as establishing technology learning centers in parks, deploying educational programs, donating computers and other equipment, establishing an organization to encourage girls to pursue careers in science and technology, and providing logistics support.

The following organizations won awards for their contributions:

  • Miami-Dade County Public Schools
  • Miami-Dade County Government
  • Memorial Healthcare System
  • FoundArt Academy
  • FPL Fibernet
  • Noreen Legault Mendoza
  • ARC Broward

South Florida is on the brink of becoming a technology powerhouse – and may one day compete with the likes of Silicon Valley or New York City for top talent. But the region can’t reign as a tech powerhouse without the help of dedicated organizations and individuals who promote digital literacy and education in our community.

As a board member for the SFDA and a former emcee for the awards ceremony, I’m excited to witness members of the community banding together to support one another in our collective goal of transforming South Florida into a hub of technological understanding and advancement.
