IRS Operations During COVID-19: What You Can Expect This Tax Season

Read

The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has been working to restore operations and improve processes to handle another challenging tax season as businesses and individuals start to file their 2020 tax returns.

After last tax season, the IRS is no stranger to disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. The agency has seen challenges in adapting its operations to a remote environment and dealing with staffing limits.

With the 2021 tax filing season already underway, the IRS reports it is processing tax returns, payments, refunds and correspondence. However, the agency notes it is still experiencing significant delays in live phone support, processing returns filed on paper, answering mail and reviewing returns.

If you’ve filed your return, received a notice, require assistance, or otherwise need to get in touch with the IRS, you can check its updated Frequently Asked Questions to find a list of actions you may have taken, how long you may have to wait, and what to do next.

Here are three main considerations to keep in mind this tax season:

  1. IRS.gov is your best resource. The IRS website is still the best and fastest way to find answers. You can find several resources and up-to-date information that explains how processes may have been delayed or changed, and what actions you can take.
  2. Check “Where’s My Refund.” The IRS recommends all taxpayers visit the “Where’s My Refund?” page for the latest updates on their return status. This is still the easiest way to find answers on your return and determine whether you must take action on pending or contested items.
  3. Mail is being processed in the order received. Due to social distancing and resource restrictions, processing mail is taking longer than usual. If you have sent a letter or notice, it will be processed as of the date it was received – you don’t need to re-send it or worry about the timeframe, as long as you answered on time on your end. Keep in mind that duplicate filings or forms will cause further delays.
